I listen to a decent amount of podcasts. This is a relatively recent habit for me, sprung from the fact that I ride my bike to work, and therefore, can't read a book on my commute. Most of the time, trying to pick out music that isn't going to annoy me or put me to sleep while I ride at 7:30 in the morning, is not a challenge I am up for. So I started downloading funny podcasts, because I like listening to people be funny in the morning. It puts me in a much better mood, I like people's funny stories and jokes, and it doesn't take any effort. I don't have to make a conscious decision in my bleary-eyed and grumpy state. I just put on the next episode of You Look Nice Today, (my personal favorite) or whichever one I'm into right then.

The latest podcast I got into was called Live, From a Shoebox. It was around April when I downloaded the latest episode, which had been recorded in March. Here's the thing. I run out of these podcasts really fast. I don't listen to a whole bunch of different ones because I'm super picky, and I don't find everyone funny. I have felt the anger of getting through all the archives of a new podcast, only to realize that they hardly ever record new ones. So, I always check the dates between episodes. This one seemed relatively safe. I downloaded it. I LOVED IT. Live, From a Shoebox was funny. That's all I need, some peeps being funny in the AM. That's all. Tell me a dumb story about your life. That's what I want to hear. Bitch about work, I don't care, as long as you can contribute to me not wanting to bike over a bridge because I'm up so early for work, I'm set. Anyway, I (of course) got through all of the archives before a new episdoe was up. I wasn't surprised, that was usually how it went. It is now four months later, and they never recorded another one.

I have since found Alison Agosti (half of the LFOS cast) on tumblr, and I follow her, because I think she's hilarious, and getting more of her hilarity in my ears obviously wasn't going to happen any time soon. She recently posted about being featured on a list about funny lady twitterers, which referred to her as "LA-based Alison (of the “Live, from a Shoebox” podcast)" I finally saw my opportunity to find out what happened to one of my favorite podcasts, and replied to the post with the following:

"What the eff ever happened to Live, From a Shoebox? I LOVED that podcast, and found it DIRECTLY before it ceased to exist. Are you doing this to hurt me?"

Which, I thought was pretty funny. Now I don't know what happened between yesterday and today, but she finally posted something about what happened to the podcast. Here's the first paragraph:

"There is a certain, very specific person that the “banter” podcast appeals to. You spend a lot of time in front of a computer, for one. Be it because of work, school or preference, you are a computer person. You have a sense of humor. You - I think this is the most important one - don’t feel “gotten” and maybe a bit lonelier than you should. I think everyone feels this at points at their life, at varying frequencies and degrees but I think you know what I’m saying (whether or not you’re comfortable admitting that aspect of your personality)."

Are you kidding me? Here I thought, "Wow, what a hilarious lady, I miss her podcast so much, where did she go from my life?" And in reality, she's pretty harshly judging me, and everyone else who enjoys her podcast, and many others like it.

I'm sorry, I'm LONELY and don't feel "gotten" like some angsty teen because I think you're funny? REALLY? Fuck off, lady. If you're too busy to do the podcast, or you had a fight with your podcast-mate, or you just don't feel like it any more, that's totally fine, and I doubt anyone with any modicum of intelligence wouldn't understand that, and move on. But to essentially call your audience out as a bunch of sad shut-ins with no friends, who have nothing better to do than surf the internet and listen to podcasts while avoiding the sun, is just mean. Especially coming from someone who has no less than three blogs, a very highly followed and frequently updated twitter account, and a decently popular (now dead) podcast.

That was a very long winded post to say, get the fuck over yourself.

I have been spending an exorbitant amount of time reading blogs lately. I got sucked into this loop where I started on one, which led me to another, which led me to another, which led me to another. At this point I'm on the verge of crashing my computer because I have so many tabs open. In any case, here are my favorites, so you too can crash your computer. Or not, if you have one that actually works correctly.

This blog makes me laugh out loud all the time. Usually in bed, where B refuses to believe me that anything written on the internet could be that funny. It can B, oh can it.

Wait, what? is a very recent discovery of mine. Basically what happened was, I was on another blog, and they posted the above picture. How do you not check that out?

I found really katie randomly when I was sad that Meghan Mcblogger hadn't posted in a bit. She made me feel better, with her comedy, and has also turned me on to such amazing things as Vodka Phonics, and Lime & Salt popcorn.

Speaking of which:

This lady is lovely, hilarious, and fosters kittens. So, there will be a lot of kitten pictures. Which is fine by me, quite frankly.

Blogger has introduced a "design" feature. With templates, and background images, and layout choices. I'm basically peeing my pants over here. As anyone who checks my tumblr (which is all of three people, I know) knows, I like to change the look of things. A lot. I realize I'm at least 75% of my own audience here, so I figure, if I'm the only one looking, it might as well be entertaining to ME. I change the look of my tumblr all the time because its easy. They have a shit ton of templates over there, and every time I'm feeling bored, I just pop in a new one. I tried to change the look on this blog previously, with little success. It was too complicated, and things just kept coming out looking really odd, because a. I have a hard time making design decisions and sticking to them, and b. I don't know anything about html. So it looked like various, asymmetrical kinds of crap around here for weeks.
Flash forward to this morning when I logged into my blogger account to find highlighted "New! Design Feature! Customize your blog!" I shuddered with excitement, and immediately tried out every single background and template option they had. For now I've settled on this one, but I can already tell I'm not 100% satisfied. There's a notebook paper background that was looking pretty dope too...

For the people who do check in regularly, don't be shocked if I change the template every three days. Although really, if you've stuck with me for this long, it can't possibly bother you that much anyway.

Now I'm feeling self conscious. uh...yeah...bye.

This is How We Live

My good friend Molly and I are launching a new blog project called This is How We Live. I read a lot of girl blogs. The kinds of blogs that are full of vintage clothes I can't get my hands on, art prints I'll never hang, $300 shoes I'll never buy, and home interiors I'll never match; no matter how much I want to.

Let me back up. I've been reading blogs like this for over a year. I stumbled upon one and got sucked right in to the endless stream of girl blogs. I love them. During most of that time I was living in a large house, with five other people, with a shared room. All I could think when I saw a photo of someone's adorable, well decorated apartment was, "oh MAN. I can't wait until I get into a new place! This will be my chance to spruce it up right! Its going to look so good! I have so many ideas!"

The reality though, is that my apartment wound up looking a lot like my last place (well, I'd like to think it looks marginally more stylish.) Its still full of my stuff, and while I was able to add a few newer, nicer things, most of them are more utilitarian than anything else, because I'm not the kind of person who ever really goes online and buys a vintage light up globe to put in the living room, even though I REALLY want one.

This got me thinking about other people my age who's places I've been to. None of them are adorably designed either. None of them are full of cute vintage chatchki's found on etsy. None of their kitchens have cookware rescued from the 70's. At best there are a few of those things scattered here and there. They look like regular apartments. Just like mine.

"This is how we Live" is a collection of photographs, all taken by Molly and I, showcasing people's homes, their bathrooms, their kitchens, the inside of their purses and bags. People like us who don't have the time, the patience, the money, and/or the presence of mind to make their living space as curated as they would like in their fantasies. Or maybe they don't fantasize about that at all, maybe this is just how they live. We want to show what life really looks like, not what it was done up to look like for a photo shoot. Its a little voyeuristic, but who cares?

We'll be posting semi-regularly, with each of us responsible for a new post every month. I'm really excited to be working on a new project, and I think this is going to be really interesting, because really, who doesn't want to see into other people's houses? Go check it out.

Awhile back I had this idea for the blog. Instead of posting random things that I liked, or saw, or photographed, I would feature one photo per post. In the meantime, I would use my tumblr to post my less curated thoughts and photos.
Welp, in perfect Andrea fashion, I had this idea, and I wanted to do it nownowNOW, so I didn't think it through. I changed the entire format of the blog, only to realize that I couldn't really achieve the look and feel I wanted on blogger. So...essentially, I did this backwards. Ugh.
Now, after weeks of struggling with html, and photoshop, and blogger nonsense that I don't care to understand or master, I've given in, and am reversing the entire thing. Back to normal here, (with a new header!), and I will be blogging single, curated photos per single post, over on tumblr. Phew.

I challenged myself last week to make some art at work, using only things I found in the house. (I have a lot of down time while kids are sleeping at my job.) I wound up cutting up a magazine, and drawing with crayons on printer paper. I'm going to try and keep it up, at least once a week, so call me out if I don't post one this week.

Hey people, I just got these great boots on etsy, but they're too narrow for me. BUMMER. So I'm selling them in my etsy shop ($60!). They're a size 9, but I bet they'll fit a size 8 1/2 as well because they're so narrow. They're currently the only thing in the shop because I'm a lazy bones who hasn't made anything for her shop in like, a year. Anyways, they're super super cute, and I'm really sad that they don't fit! I want them to get a good home so someone can look awesome this spring. Excuse me, I'm off to internet shop for boots to rival these that actually fit my feet.

Molly asked me to design a poster for her improv group, Goatbutter this past weekend, and I was flattered and all excited to do it. Let's face it, I work better on a deadline. The top one (pink) is the collage I created for it, and the bottom (orange/yellow) is the final poster. I'm not happy with the font, only because I would have preferred to do all the text by hand myself, but didn't have the time.
I am in the beginning stages of a few new projects, which I'm really excited about, including a collaboration with Molly. I think the warm weather has sparked my creativity. Go sun.

I was up rather early this morning. As such, I was not in the friendliest of moods as I entered the subway accompanied by a plethora of damp Bostonians. As often happens when I am on the T, I was immediately infuriated by the actions of several fellow commuters who were clearly raised in some farm town where they don't have "people" or "public transportation," only cows and corn.
Anyway, I was almost to work when I witnessed this:

Let me break this down for you. These two ladies do not know one another. This nice blonde girl on the left is clearly just minding her own business, trying to get wherever she's going, when the hot mess next to her in the purple clogs plops down, and proceeds to wrap her arm around her like they're on their first date. I managed to capture the poor girl's awkward, painfully uncomfortable, "GET THIS CRAZY LADY AWAY FROM ME" face (which is priceless by the way.) What I neglected to capture however, was the crazy lady's big crazy grin, exaggerated yawning, mumbling to herself, and stretching out like she was lying at home in bed. Oh. My. Lord. What is wrong with people?!!!! Jesus christ on a bicycle, stop with the closeness! Some people don't like early morning intimacy with strangers! And this isn't the first time I've witnessed this over-the-shoulder familiarity on my morning commute, in fact this is the second time in two days I have witnessed this atrocity. So guess what people? Get off each other on the subway. Just keep it to yourself.
Completely off topic, those boots she's wearing. I'm 90% sure they're the faux leather one's from Old Navy that I JUST MISSED out on and became crazily obsessed with finding last month. To the point of calling at least twenty Old Navy stores trying to find a pair. Come to think of it, maybe she deserves that crazy lady's embrace, my-boot wearing bitch.

Me: True, but we are trying to be skinny, remember? We’ve been feeling chunked-out since the holidays. And we’re trying to be more like Kate Moss who said being skinny is way better than feeling our food and being fat or something like that. remember? remember!!!

Body: But one bag of Doritos isn’t going to hurt us. We can eat carrot sticks after that.

Me: But we’re also going to the hockey game tonight and wouldn’t you rather save the junk food for then?

Body: Julie, we might die before the hockey game. Who knows when our last breath will be. It’s better to eat the Doritos while we have a chance.

In the midst of some looting chaos in Haiti, Anderson Cooper literally saved the life of a young Haitian boy who was hit in the head with a chunk of concrete. The boy, who looked seriously injured, was more or less helpless in the middle of the street fight, and realizing the dire situation, Anderson Cooper dives into the crowd fetches the boy and brings him to safety.

I was taken to see The Phantom Menace by my highschool boyfriend, who was VERY excited about it. So excited in fact, that he was one of those kids who slept in line to see the midnight showing the night it opened. He LOVED it. LOVED. If there were something more powerful than caps lock, I would have used it just then. I, on the other hand, was interested, but skeptical...
I fell asleep. My boyfriend was not amused.
That movie was atrocious. I've thought that since it was released, and have been largely backed up by everyone on the planet, but never until now has anyone so full realized the inherent and complete catastrophe that that movie was.

Watch all of it. You will not be sorry.

Holiday cheese shapes. For real. This is a thing, that exists in a store near you. Who the hell is coming up with this crap?"You know guys, it's not TRULY the holiday season until you have your crackers and Christmas tree cheese...and who wants to cut those out THEMSELVES?"

Are we kidding? Pancake batter. In a whipped cream can. That means that 13 year olds across America can now huff pancake batter fumes. Wow. Do you think it comes out all fluffy and makes little pancake mountains?

I have nothing snarky to say about the ski cheese. It comes in a cute little ikea-esque red cube, it's brown underneath the wrapping, and it tastes like caramel! Which, I admit does not sound like it woul be good (caramel cheese?) but I assure you, it is delicious.

The idea of what this decade was like in the eyes of a nine year old, who has never experienced anything but what has happened since 2000, is really interesting, I mean, just think about their views on computers. These kids have never lived in a world without computers, or the internet. Wow. However, I feel like a lot of their answers have no bearing on a reflection of the decade so much as a reflection on the fact that these children are nine. They're nine. Of course they have odd answers for what the biggest news story in their lifetime was, they're NINE.
Still pretty interesting though...so watch it.

I wound up heading to New York for Halloween this year, as the B was playing at a loft party in Brooklyn. Rats.

haircuts, babies, the first pumpkin of fall!, multiple weekend trips to NYC, the B played a show under a jellyfish, and a retirement party for my grandmother attended by no other than (my favorite of favorite) Molly. What on earth are they feeding kids in Finland? These two are FOUR YEARS OLD. I'm not sure if this is an amazing accomplishment, or just a case of people using their kids as a as a medium for their "cute art."

I took the tour of the Tower of London when I was a kid, and I loved practically every second of it, by far one of my favorite parts, however, was the flock, or I guess, "unkindness" of ravens kept there, so finding this on Kottke today really made me smile.

"A group of ravens is referred to as a congress or an unkindness. The most famous unkindness of six ravens at the Tower of London are employees, kept on staff at the expense of the British government. There are claims that the ravens were decreed to be kept by King Charles II to prevent disaster, or that they had been placed near the Tower in order to dramatize execution proceedings. These days they're kept around for tourists, and they are fed well (for ravens) on a diet consisting of raw meat, bird formula biscuits soaked in blood, whole rabbit, eggs once a week, and occasional pieces of fried bread.

Ravens are fairly vicious by nature, so the Tower's Ravenmaster must bond with them over a period of six weeks when they are fledglings. These birds are so vital to the Tower's image that several fledglings are kept as understudies for the six working birds as they die, even though the average raven lifespan is twenty-five years. The current raven roster at the Tower consists of Gwylum, Thor, Hugin, Munin, Branwen, Bran, Gundulf, Baldrick, Fleur, and Colin."

The south end of Boston is a very particular kind of a place. It's full of dog walkers, snooty moms, and Irish nannies. Occaisionally you get a snooty dad on the playground, starbucks in hand and thick-rimmed hipster glasses firmly in place. But I can't help feeling like i'm part of the problem when I'm the fourth out of five caregivers half watching the kids, half typing on their phone.

I've been absent for awhile (not that it matters as no one reads this except for Molly, HEEEEEEEEEY GIRL!) and today is my birthday (27!) So here's what's been going on over here:

a new project, debauchery, making sangria at home, the B turned into a moose, another new project, home made eggs benedict (with hollandaise sauce from scratch!), we started a porch garden, and got a PS3 !!! I also finally got a new job and a new apartment. Pictures are forthcoming. Plans for today, more debauchery.
